These features were digitized from a variety of historical sources, including BLM General Land Office maps, USGS maps, the 1886 Spencer Map, and others. The dataset covers most of southern Arizona, though the examples shown here are restricted to Cochise County.
Because many of these maps exist in multiple editions, the data were drawn from the oldest available versions. As with any features digitized from historic cartography, accuracy can be challenging—both due to the quality of the original survey work and to the distortions that arise during georeferencing. For this reason, the dataset should be used as a guide rather than an exact representation. By default, the roads and telegraph lines layers are turned off. You can toggle them on using the layer stack to explore these features in more detail.
